NRP 75 Big Data supports research projects that provide foundations for effective and appropriate use of big data. NRP 75 addresses the increasing needs for enabling new data-driven applications and creating value from data. At the same time, it focuses on the needs for understanding and shaping the impacts of big data on society.
BigData-Dialog shows the diversity of research in NRP 75. The contributions range from soil erosion and trade agreements to ultra-fast algorithms and much more.
Using data effectively and shaping its impacts
Computing and communication devices accompany, influence and guide our everyday life. These devices are embedded in large networks and are producing increasing amounts of data. Likewise, science and industry are also generating increasing amounts of data.
Novel solutions are needed to contend with, and create value from, these enormous volumes of data in the future. This results in highly relevant research questions in the area of computing and information technology. Thus, NRP 75 supports innovative foundational research with the goal of processing and managing big data efficiently and effectively.
Big data will have a profound effect on society. The way we live, work and interact within society will change significantly. Questions related to privacy and mapping of data with regard to ownership are being raised. Therefore, appropriate regulatory measures are required, and citizens must understand the implications of big data. To this end, NRP 75 supports research projects in law and social sciences.
In addition, it supports projects that bring together computing experts and application domain experts to enable new, specific big data applications in business and society with a substantial potential for value creation.
The total funding of NRP 75 is CHF25 million. The duration of the research is five years (until 2022).
